Have not thought of cyberbullying in recent months. Channel 8 caught my attention with its reporting on Facebook's new approach to addressing the problem.

Ita, this week our school had a guest speaker, Keith Dunn, who spoke to our students, teachers, and parents about cyberbullying. He travels around the country and his website is www.kdcop.com. I have to say that he opened the eyes of a lot of kids and teachers alike with his stories and knowledge on the topic. Kids don't seem to realize the implication of using technology and how dangerous it can be.
ReplyDeleteI do know of parents who have engaged in cyberbullying.
DeleteI'll share the info with my principal. Hope she can afford him.
We are learning about all the exciting technology that can be used to promote learning and student engagement, but unfortunately technology can be misused and cause harm. It is nice to see that Facebook acknowledges cyber bullying and is willing to address the issue.
ReplyDeleteI have tried to convince students that the delete button does not mean their entries cannot be retrieved.
DeleteI have to echo everything that Renee and Diana have said. This morning while watching the Today show, they aired a segment about bullying on Facebook. This time adults are using Facebook to perform acts of cyber bullying. Please check out the video. This video should be watched with caution due to inappropriate language and content.

Last school year I had a few parents who were involved in cyberbullying of students.
DeleteI had no idea that facebook was setting this up. Very interesting to watch and it is comforting to know that student are being prompted with questions to help them understand if someone is bothering or bullying them online.
ReplyDeleteRegards to last comment: It is sad to know that so many adults are modeling behavior online that is not appropriate. This may be more of an argument that schools need to start teaching appropriate use of technology in maybe an actual class that is required.
Schools should use their social service department and their fanily resource aid to present this video or link to parents. At the same time, it should also be a presentation to students.
